How to choose the right paint colour for your home

Have you ever had to make the impossible decision between two similar whites, or felt overwhelmed when trying to decide between that beautiful, deep blue or a slightly lighter shade? Well you are not alone! Change is often scary and for most people, the fear of mucking up can take over when trying to choose a new colour.

A fresh coat of paint can do wonders for any home, so don’t let your lack of confidence stop you from moving forward with the task at hand. Whether you’re starting from scratch with a new-build, reinvigorating your current home, or simply jazzing up a space with a splash of colour, these simple tips will ensure you choose the right shade for your space every time.

1. Do your research before you buy

Blogs and magazines are great places to start. You’ll be able to gather a wealth of knowledge from professionals and DIY regulars alike, drawing inspiration and creativity from their work.

Social media platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest can also be the perfect visual tools, with interior designers and stylists sharing their concepts and creative ideas. Be sure to follow your favourite accounts or start ‘pinning’ to keep track of ideas you like best.

Your surroundings can also be an easy way to explore new design ideas. From the leafy, green park near your house, to industrial buildings in the city or your friend’s new feature wall, creativity can strike at any moment when you’re looking for it!

2. Decide on your colour scheme

Before you select the exact colour you’ll use in your home, it’s important to think about your overall colour scheme, as well as the look and feel you hope to create.

Brightening up a room with a light white or neutral tone will make a space feel more open and inviting, whilst a darker tone will refine a space and make any artwork or plants pop. Matching colour schemes with existing furniture, artwork or accessories around your home will ensure consistency and help you achieve your ideal look.

Simply choose an image from the gallery to start experimenting with colours, helping you to find the ideal combination for your kitchen, bedroom, exterior or bathroom.

When you’re ready, head to your nearest Bunnings Warehouse and pick up some colour chips or sample pots to test out at home. Remember, colours look different as the lighting changes throughout the day. Before you commit to painting the entire wall or room, be sure to test a patch for at least 24 hours.
